Petrology Death Valley 2007 103

Pictured here is Kerri Johnson. Kerri is a recent graduate from Cal Poly San Luis Opispo, with her bachelor’s degree in Earth Science. Kerri is looking for a job.

We talked to a lot of professionals at the mines we visited. Adrian and Mike who work for Veneco and ESA respecively even came with us on the trip.

Kerri was very eager to talk to everyone, asking them what their jobs were like, the fun parts, the not so fun parts and so forth.

When Mike was describing his job to her Keri asked him what his title was. He simply replied “Geologist.”

Everyone at the back of the bus listening to their exchange had the same reaction: a silent nod followed by “nice.”

We all understood what it meant to be a geologist, it is what we all are aspiring to become. To us that simple four syllable word spoke volumes. To be a geologist is to follow in the footsteps of those we most admire doing exactly what we love.

A flower in the desert

Opuntia basilarus,

or beavertail cactus, noted for its flowers and lack of spines. A striking flower adding beauty to the desert. This photo was taken in Perlite Canyon near Beaty Nevada.

New Banner

The photo in my banner is of the Amargosa Chaos. A melange of stratigraphic and volcanic units outside of Death Valley that have been faulted, folded and otherwise shaped into an almost incomprehensible mess. This photo was taken on my Petrology class field trip to Death Valley. I thought it would be an appropriate picture for Crazed Ramblings. I’ll have more photos and posts in the next few days

Lets hope FOX doesn’t ruin this one

The new show Drive debuted on FOX last night and I highly recommend checking it out. Drive is a visceral edge-of-your-seat type action show that really knows how to pace action sequences (awesome car chases) with dramatic moments. The show’s characters are very relatable and archetypal without resorting to stereotypes. Nathan Fillion steals the show but look closely for other Whedonverse players (Richard “Early” Brooks has a cameo in the beginning. And Amy “Fred” Acker plays Fillion’s wife) If you notice any others please let me know, but definitely give the show a watch .

Opening Ceremonies

Well here I am at last, on the Internet. My thoughts recorded digitally for all posterity. One thousand years from now some graduate student will be pouring over blogs like this one trying to figure out why people were so messed up way back in the twenty-first century. Lets try not to disappoint.

Who am I kidding though. I’m sure the only things reading our blogs in the thirty-first century will be humanity’s children. Yes I am talking about our hyper intelligent cybernetic ape overlords. So Dr. Zaius, enjoy.

Don't call him a monkey!

For the rest of you, I’ll be posting about my trip to Death Valley and vicinity soon.
